October of 1963, Manuel Houllis opened the "Island House Restaurant" on
Clearwater Beach, Florida. For the next 30 years, along with his wife Mary, Son
Michael, and Daughter Madelyne, he treated locals and tourists from all over
the country and the world to Greek and American cuisine. The menu combined
Greek specialties with a complete line of seafood, steaks, chops, and pasta.
The restaurant became world famous. The sing along piano bar added
much to the legend. |
souIt was well known as the hangout
for the Philadelphia Phillies Brass each spring while they were in
Clearwater for Spring Training. Over the years the restaurant was mentioned in
Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, The Philadelphia Enquirer, and the Cubs
Vineline for being the restaurant of choice by baseball people. The restaurant
featured a Baseball Wall in one of its dining rooms that had
pictures and signatures of hundreds of sports celebrities that dined there over
the years. After 30 years of serving the public faithfully the Houllis family
sold the restaurant. The new owners had a tough act to follow and the
restaurant closed as the Island House a year and a half later. Since that time
the Houllis family has been inundated by former customers for a chance again to
indulge in the cuisine that they enjoyed and missed so much.

souManuel and Mary
Houllis passed in 1998 but son Michael who helped operate the restaurant and
made the soup the last 22 years continued to hear the requests. Through all the
requests Michael always was amused by the variety of entree's the people
remembered enjoying. The menu was extensive, and the favorite entree would
vary, but there was one item always mentioned first. The item that was missed
most was the Greek Chicken (Avgo-Lemono Soupa) Soup. So after all the requests,
son Michael Houllis, daughter Madelyne Houllis LaChance, grandson Darwin, and
son in law Barry have brought out the Houllis' secret recipe of the signature
Greek family soup to the masses.
